Originally created under the auspices of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this design was a promotional piece for a Special Summer Course in COBOL programming. Beyond its surface as a piece of visual communication, it stands as a relic of a bygone era — when computer science still carried an air of mystery, exclusivity, and intellectual superiority.
The composition — a series of abstract red and blue geometric forms — manages to communicate both rigor and playfulness, embodying the duality of programming as both logic and art. In other words: it’s a poster you can casually gesture to during a dinner party while muttering something about “semiotic structures in mid-century visual language.”
